Hair Color Trends: If you're in the mood for a 2022 hairstyle makeover, why not dye your hair...
Plenty of celebrities — from Kendall Jenner to Hailey Bieber — have swapped out their signature hair colors for a new one in 2022. Of course, they inspired us to do the same. The warm season of spring and summer is ideal for new beginnings, and whether you're trying out a drastic new shade or just want to give your current style a new shine with a hair color change, experimenting with the color of your hair is a great way to enhance your style revitalize your look.
In the following, we talk to experts to find out what's hot right now.
Like anything red, copper is a big trend. "Sharp copper is this year's trend tone," says colorist John Clark, who works at John Frieda: "I've seen Kendall Jenner and turned brunette and blonde hair into this rich, fiery shade. The emphasis isn't on a bright orange, but rather on a burnt sienna red with terracotta and cinnamon tones" - a great hair color trend 2022 to emphasize the eye color, whether hazelnut brown or blue.
Sally Northwood, a colorist at George Northwood, also cites the copper hair color as a big trend and says that demand in the salon has already increased: "We usually see more requests for copper hair color in the fall, so it's interesting that the demand in coming spring this year," she says, adding that it's a very versatile hair color and suits many different skin tones. "From bolder reds and burgundies to orange hues, if you're thinking of making the move, it's best to talk to your colorist to find the shade that works best for you."
If you, like many, are contemplating going brunette now and/or showing off your natural hair color, make sure your hair looks ultra-luxe and expensive. "Iconic blondes have switched to the dark side in recent months - Hailey Bieber is a good example of the new hair color trend with her new chocolate brunette," says Northwood. "The warm tones of her hair look rich, shiny, and expensive."
Northwood worked with influencer Camille Charriere to gradually transform her signature beachy blonde into a natural brunette shade, and says the goal is to "elevate her natural hair color." Semi-permanent hair color is a great way to get there. Hairstylist Adam Reed says it's all about giving the hair a more sophisticated touch by using "multiple rich shades" throughout the hair.
Whether you're already a brunette or just trying it out, you should use a deep conditioner to achieve a high shine.
Those who don't want to rush it with copper should slowly dive into the 2022 hair color trend with a strawberry blonde, apricot shade instead. "It's a hot trend here in New York," says colorist Gina Gilbert, "we incorporate a lot of gold tones to create dimension and contrast." She just warns that you need the right skin and eye tone to wear it.
Power Color isn't about a specific shade, it's about the technique used to apply each hair color trend, says colorist Josh Wood. "There's a return to bold blocks and primary colors," he says. "They can be achieved with a semi-permanent shine to intensify the hair color you're starting with."
All the colorists we spoke to said that blonde is back and stronger than ever - great news for anyone who likes the beachy look, come rain or shine. One of the most alluring ways to wear blonde is the '70s style with bangs: "It's a return to the multi-faceted, layered blonde worn by hair icons like Farrah Fawcett and Goldie Hawn," explains Reed. "Think layers and layers of tonal blonde with a shaded root and you're on the right track."
Alex Brownsell, founder and creative director of Bleach London, agrees that blonde is back as a hair color trend for 2022 - not least because Gigi Hadid, Stella Maxwell and FKA Twigs have recently returned to blonde: "Everyone who dark during and after lockdown is now ready for summer," she says. Clark says his favorite is a "Hollywood sun blonde" because it blends champagne and platinum tones — Eiza Gonzalez and Jodie Comer are examples. Crucially, this blonde shouldn't look too "done".
Alongside the luxe brunette trend, there's also a slightly lighter hair color trend - like Pernille Teisbaeck - that's all the rage: "Think hazelnut and oak," says hairstylist Larry King, "these tones give the hair a sense of brightness, without being blonde. They are low maintenance and cool while still matching the hair's natural tone."
"For anyone who has grown out of their hair color in recent years and addressed their gray hair, the luxe mink trend is a way to have a little fun with hair color without starting over by re-dyeing to go," says King. "The idea is to put darker pops of color and nice mink or bisque bits in the hair." This creates dimension and movement and is a great way to create a beautiful transition while showing off your silver strands as a hair color trend for 2022.
Swap out lighter tips for '90s-style highlights to brighten the face and make skin glow. "Unlike a balayage, which is blended from root to tip, '90s slices are highlighted sections of hair scattered throughout the hairstyle that really pop—and they're painted freely," says colorist Harriet Muldoon, who works at Larry King on her top spring trend.
